Description

### 🚨 What is QuickBooks Error H303?

**QuickBooks Error Code H303** is part of the H-series errors (H101, H202, H303, H505), all of which relate to multi-user mode issues. Specifically, H303 indicates that the computer on which the company file is stored needs additional configuration or permissions to allow access from other devices.

When you try to access a QuickBooks file from a workstation (not the main host), QuickBooks attempts to connect through the network. If this connection fails due to incorrect settings or blocked ports, Error H303 is triggered.

### 🔍 Common Symptoms of Error H303

Here are the warning signs that you may be facing QuickBooks Error H303:

* QuickBooks cannot open the company file located on another computer.
* The application freezes or becomes sluggish when switching to multi-user mode.
* You receive an H303 error code prompt on your screen.
* The server computer is unable to host the file.
* You’re unable to communicate with the server hosting the file.

### 💡 Causes of QuickBooks Error H303

To fix the error, it’s important to understand its root causes. The most common include:

1. **Improper Hosting Configuration:** The workstation trying to access the file is not configured to allow file sharing or multi-user mode.
2. **Firewall Settings Blocking Communication:** The firewall or security software is preventing QuickBooks from accessing the company file on the network.
3. **Damaged or Incomplete QuickBooks Installation:** If QuickBooks installation files are missing or corrupted, it may trigger network-related errors.
4. **Incorrect DNS Settings:** DNS misconfiguration can prevent computers from identifying each other over the network.
5. **QuickBooks Database Server Manager is Not Running:** This utility is required for multi-user access to work properly.

### 🛠 How to Fix QuickBooks Error H303

#### **Step 1: Use QuickBooks File Doctor**

Intuit provides a free tool called **QuickBooks Tool Hub**, which includes the **File Doctor Tool** that automatically detects and fixes common company file and network errors.

* Download the latest version of QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit’s website.
* Install and open the Tool Hub.
* Go to the **Company File Issues** tab and select **Run QuickBooks File Doctor**.
* Browse for your company file and select **Check your file** and then **Continue**.
* Enter your QuickBooks Admin credentials.

Let the scan complete. If it detects and fixes the problem, you may no longer see the H303 error.

#### **Step 2: Check Hosting Settings on All Systems**

Only the **server or host computer** should have hosting enabled.

* Open QuickBooks on each workstation.
* Go to **File > Utilities**.
* If you see “**Host Multi-User Access**,” do *not* select it (this means hosting is disabled, which is correct for a workstation).
* If you see “**Stop Hosting Multi-User Access**,” click it to disable hosting on that machine.

On the **server**, hosting should be **enabled**.

#### **Step 3: Configure Windows Firewall Settings**

QuickBooks uses specific ports for multi-user communication. You’ll need to add firewall exceptions.

**QuickBooks Desktop 2024 Port Number:**

* **8019, 56728, 55378-55382**

To add exceptions manually:

1. Open **Windows Firewall**.
2. Click on **Advanced Settings**.
3. Click **Inbound Rules > New Rule**.
4. Choose **Port**, click **Next**.
5. Add the required ports, and allow the connection.
6. Repeat the process for **Outbound Rules**.

You can also use QuickBooks Database Server Manager to configure these settings automatically.

#### **Step 4: Use QuickBooks Database Server Manager**

* Open **QuickBooks Tool Hub**.
* Go to the **Network Issues** tab.
* Launch **QuickBooks Database Server Manager**.
* Click **Start Scan** after selecting the folder where your company file is located.
* Once the scan completes, the firewall permissions will be configured, and the tool will ensure that hosting is enabled.

#### **Step 5: Rename .ND and .TLG Files**

These configuration files can sometimes cause issues. Renaming them forces QuickBooks to recreate them.

1. Open the folder where your company file is stored.
2. Locate files with the same name as your company file but with extensions **.ND** and **.TLG** (e.g., `CompanyFile.qbw.nd`).
3. Right-click and rename the files to `CompanyFile.qbw.nd.old` and `CompanyFile.qbw.tlg.old`.

Then re-open QuickBooks and try accessing the file.

#### **Step 6: Verify Network Connectivity**

* Press **Windows + R**, type `ping [ServerName]`, and hit Enter.

* Example: `ping SERVER01`
* If you see packet loss or a timeout, there may be network connectivity issues.
* Check your router, Ethernet cables, or Wi-Fi connection as needed.

#### **Step 7: Add Server Name to Windows Hosts File**

If DNS is misconfigured, m
