The power battle between Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, two of the most significant Mafia bosses of the 1950s, is the subject of Barry Levinson’s captivating novel The Alto Knights. Expectations for a film that could offer an immersive and thrilling interpretation of organized crime history were naturally high, given that renowned actor Robert De Niro would be playing both parts. This, together with a screenplay written by Nicholas Pileggi, the author of Goodfellas, seemed to have all the makings of a legendary mob film. The Alto Knights, however, ultimately stumbles to establish itself, producing a fragmented and unimpressive story that doesn’t make an impression. This is in spite of its intriguing premise.
